Laat ik beginnen met een nieuwtje, want daar is deze blog immers ook voor. Het laatste deel in de serie over Damien Kingston in de Burgeroorlog is inmiddels aangekocht door de bibliotheek, zodat de hele serie nu te leen is.
Nu we deze formaliteit achter de rug hebben, is het tijd voor de eigenlijke blog.
Ik ben in mijn eigen val gelopen
Ik ben in mijn eigen val gelopen… Neem nooit iets voor vanzelfsprekend aan. Nooit. Check alles. Altijd. Twee keer.
Ik was aan het schrijven. Het hoofdstuk speelde zich af rond 1875 in het Wilde Westen. Er kwamen saloons en cowboys in voor. En tja, op een gegeven moment werd er een kaartje gelegd.
Nu wist ik wel dat ze pokerden. Dat hoefde ik niet te checken. Ja, er waren ook andere spelletjes, maar poker is historisch verantwoord.
Maar ik weet alleen niets van poker. Stom spel. En als je een beetje een realistisch spelletje met een logische manier van winnen of verliezen wilt beschrijven, zul je toch de spelregels moeten kennen. Gelukkig hebben we daar het internet voor en spelregels zijn gemakkelijk te vinden.
Dus zette ik me aan de vervelende taak de regels een beetje onder de knie te krijgen en de terminologie, de manieren van valsspelen te begrijpen, en schreef toen het hoofdstuk.
Poker is behoorlijk veranderd
En toen viel ik in mijn eigen val. Ik ging ervan uit dat men toen hetzelfde pokerspelletje speelde als nu! Het was puur bij toeval, omdat ik nog één detail wilde uitzoeken, dat ik erachter kwam dat dit dus niet het geval was.
Potverdorie! Nu kon ik de hele boel herschrijven. Want wat stond er op de website? “In het Oude Westen werd nog geen draw poker gespeeld, maar alleen stud poker.” En dat is dus heel wat anders! Bij ‘draw’ krijg je vijf kaarten dicht, zet je in, wissel je zoveel als je nodig vindt en daarna begint het bieden. Beetje kort door de bocht, maar daar komt het wel op neer. Maar bij stud is maar één kaart gesloten en ligt de rest open op tafel!
Maar potjandrie! In al die cowboyfilms zie je toch echt altijd cowboys zitten met een hand met vijf gesloten kaarten! Tja, het Hollywood-effect! Geloof nooit een Hollywood-film. Neem het nooit klakkeloos voor waar aan! Negen van de tien keer klopt er namelijk geen hout van.
En het werd nog erger. In het Oude Westen werd er met een pak van twintig kaarten gespeeld, dus alle kaarten werden uitgedeeld. Van het hele pak kaarten in het spel wist je dus maar van drie kaarten niet welke dat waren.
Tja, dat verandert het spel natuurlijk aanmerkelijk. Niet alleen zijn de combinaties anders (er is bijvoorbeeld geen verschil tussen een flush en een royal flush), maar ook is valsspelen praktisch onmogelijk en is bluffen ook veel lastiger. En juist dat valsspelen was cruciaal in mijn verhaal.
Uren aan tutorials
En ik had net uren aan tutorials op YouTube bekeken hoe vals delen en schudden in zijn werk gaat, zodat ik dat goed beschrijven kon!
Grr… Al dat werk voor niets! Een hele zondagmiddag verprutst aan iets wat ik niet eens interessant vind. Ik moest alles overdoen! Ik was in mijn eigen val gevallen. Ik had moeten weten dat ik het eerst had moeten checken.
Of toch niet?
Je moet namelijk internetbronnen ook niet klakkeloos voor waar aannemen. Jawel, de site had gelijk over het Oude Westen en stud. Maar de periode ‘Oude Westen’ duurde langer dan alleen het ‘Wilde Westen’.
Met wat geluk stuitte ik op een site die wat uitvoeriger was. In het begin was er alleen stud poker met twintig kaarten. Dus dat stukje informatie klopte wel. Maar tijdens de California goudkoorts van 1849 verspreidde het spel zich van New Orleans naar San Francisco en werd voor het eerst een kaartspel van 52 kaarten gebruikt. Bovendien werd draw poker geïntroduceerd. Kijk, dat veranderde de zaak al! Ik begon opgetogen te raken.
Toen las ik dat de combinatie ‘straight’ na de Burgeroorlog toegevoegd werd, dus voor het jaar waarin mijn verhaal zich afspeelt. Verwarrend was dan wel weer dat diezelfde site ook schreef dat toen stud geïntroduceerd werd… Internet is soms een zegen, maar soms word je er ook niet goed wijs uit.
Het werd nog lastiger, want rond 1875 werd de wild card voor het eerst gebruikt.
In één keer goed
Tja, het leek erop dat ik toch niet alles hoefde te herschrijven. Maar ik wilde het nu zeker weten. Wat speelden cowboys in Dodge City en revolverhelden in Tombstone nu wel en niet? Ik wilde het nu in één keer goed doen.
Het komt erop neer dat het meest gespeelde spel ten westen van de Mississippi ‘jackpots’ was, een ouderwetse term voor wat we nu Five-Card Draw zouden noemen. Wel met een paar kleine veranderingen, maar welke dat waren, heb ik dan weer niet kunnen vinden.
Eén hoofdstuk, zes uur studie en zoeken op internet… Er gaat heel wat tijd in een boek zitten. En het pad is bezaaid met vallen.
Maar je leert er wel van alles van. Ik weet nu de regels van poker nu en toen. Niet dat ik er veel aan heb, want ik zal het nooit spelen. Stom spel…
Bluff Poker
Let me start with a piece of news, because that’s what this blog is for, too. The last volume in the series about Damien Kingston in the Civil War has now been purchased by the library, so the entire series is now available to be borrowed.
Now that we’ve got this formality out of the way, it’s time for the actual blog.
I’ve fallen into my own trap
I’ve fallen into my own trap… Never take anything for granted. Never. Check everything. All the time. Twice.
I was writing. The chapter took place around 1875 in the Wild West. It featured saloons and cowboys. And well, at some point playing cards appeared on the table.
Now I knew they played poker. I didn’t have to check that. Yes, there were other games as well, but poker is historically accurate.
But I just don’t know anything about poker. Stupid game. And if you want to describe a bit of a realistic game with a logical way of winning or losing, you will have to know the rules of the game. Fortunately, we have the internet for that, and rules of the game are easy to find.
So I set myself to the tedious task of mastering the rules a little bit and understanding the terminology, the ways of cheating, and then wrote the chapter.
Poker has considerably changed
And then I fell into my own trap. I assumed that people were playing the same poker game back then as they do now! It was purely by chance, because I wanted to find out one more detail, that I found out that this was not the case.
Damn it! Now I could rewrite the whole thing. Because what was on the website? “In the Old West, draw poker was not yet played, but only stud poker.” And that’s something completely different! In ‘draw’ you get five cards face down, you place your bet, you exchange as many cards as you think necessary and then the bidding begins. A bit short-sighted, but that’s what it comes down to. But in stud, only one card is face down and the rest is face up on the table!
But darn! In all those cowboy movies, you always see cowboys with a hand with five cards face down! Well, the Hollywood effect! Never believe a Hollywood movie. Never take it at face value! Nine times out of ten, it’s completely wrong.
And it got worse. In the Old West, the game was played with a deck of twenty cards, so all cards were dealt. Of the entire deck of cards in the game, only three cards were unknown to the players.
Well, of course, that changes the game considerably. Not only are the combinations different (e.g. there is no difference between a flush and a royal flush), but cheating is practically impossible and bluffing is also much more difficult. And it was precisely that cheating that was crucial in my story.
Hours of tutorials
And I had just watched hours of tutorials on YouTube on how to cheat and shuffle, so I could describe it properly!
Grr… All that work for nothing! A whole Sunday afternoon wasted on something I don’t even find interesting. I had to do it all over again! I had fallen into my own trap. I should have known that I should have checked it first.
Or not?
After all, you shouldn’t blindly accept internet sources as true, either. Yes, the site was right about the Old West and stud. But the ‘Old West’ period lasted longer than just the ‘Wild West’.
With a bit of luck, I stumbled upon a site that was a bit more comprehensive. In the beginning, there was only twenty-card stud poker. So that piece of information was correct. But during the California gold rush of 1849, the game spread from New Orleans to San Francisco, using a 52-card deck for the first time. In addition, draw poker was introduced. See, that changed the matter already! I was starting to get excited.
Then I read that the combination ‘straight’ was added after the Civil War, so before the year in which my story takes place. Confusingly, the same site also wrote that stud was introduced at that time… Internet is sometimes a blessing, but sometimes you can’t make sense of it.
It became even more difficult, because around 1875 the wild card was used for the first time.
Right in one turn
Well, it seemed that I didn’t have to rewrite everything after all. But I wanted to be sure now. What did cowboys in Dodge City and gunslingers in Tombstone play and what didn’t they play? I wanted to get it right in one turn now.
The bottom line is that the most played game west of the Mississippi was ‘jackpots’, an old-fashioned term for what we would now call Five-Card Draw. With a few small changes, that is, but of course, I couldn’t find what they were.
One chapter, six hours of study and searching the internet… A lot of time goes into a book. And the path is littered with traps.
But you do learn a lot from it. I now know the rules of poker now and then. Not that it’s of much use to me, because I’ll never play it. Stupid game…
